Patient Story: Hicky (Multiple Sclerosis)

Hicky was diagnosed with MS in 2003 although she had symptoms for 3 years prior to this diagnosis. Hicky contacted PWYA in 2014 after her previous physio had retired. Hicky has been treated by Fiona every two weeks since then.

MS is a progressive condition with no cure, therefore treatment has been aimed at managing Hickys symptoms so that she can continue to enjoy her many hobbies. Hicky suffers from pain and stiffness in her muscles, which can occur in her neck and shoulders, her lower back, or her right leg - depending on what jobs she has been doing in the garden that week!

Fascial release techniques (hands-on therapy), muscle realignment, and the therapeutic use of the Hypervolt (a specialist massage device) are all used during treatment to reduce pain and stiffness, which allows Hicky to continue with her gardening.

As the MS has progressed, support has been provided to assist Hicky in making decisions about adapting her environment and using equipment in order to maintain her independence. Hicky is still able to walk short distances with a stick, but also uses a travel scoot inside and a scooter in the garden.

Last year, Hicky slipped on some ice and dislocated her shoulder. After a few weeks in a care home (when physio sessions continued with Fiona) Hicky was able to return home. Hicky also had a few sessions with our Musculo Skeletal Specialist Physio, Hannah, who was able to give her expert advice about specific shoulder exercises.

Hicky decided to stop physio at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic as she was shielding. After 2 months, Hicky contacted Fiona to request physio restarting as her muscles had become so stiff that she was worried that she would fall, and she was no longer able to manage her doorstep without help. After some intensive sessions, Hicky felt safe again and her fear of falling had reduced, but she decided to continue with physio to prevent further risk.

Throughout Covid-19, the PWYA team have risk-assessed all visits. We comply with government guidelines for the wearing of PPE.

Hicky’s goals are to stay as mobile as possible for as long as possible in order that she can continue to care for herself. Fiona will continue to support Hicky with this, and adapt therapy dependent on her needs.
