What Is Stroke?

Stroke is caused by a disruption to the blood flow to the brain. As a result brain cells are killed or damaged which can result in problems with movement, thinking processes and emotion.

There are two different kind of strokes – Ischaemic stroke caused by a blood clot or haemorrhagic stroke caused by bleeding in the brain.

For more information about stroke such as causes, symptoms and medical management please go to the Stroke Association, which has a wealth of resources available.

How can PWYA help you post stroke?

We have a number of highly experienced and specialist therapists who have worked in Stroke for over 15 years – physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. We will see you - whether you have recently suffered a stroke, or had your stroke many years ago, and whatever your level of disability.

Physiotherapy

We will assess you thoroughly to identify the particular ways your stroke has affected you with attention to your muscle length and strength, body posture and alignment, movement and function. We will aim to address these through hands-on therapy to help you gain alignment, activate muscles and build strength. We will apply our knowledge of movement and function to help you achieve your goals through specific exercise and movement. We can apply these principles to any person with a stroke regardless of the severity of your impairments and disability.

We can also assist training carers or family members how to best help you, and encourage you to do activities and exercises which will further enhance your recovery.
