What is Head Injury (Traumatic Brain Injury – TBI)

TBI is an injury to the brain caused by a trauma to the head (head injury). There are many possible causes, including road traffic accidents, assaults, falls and accidents at home or at work. The effects of a traumatic brain injury on an individual depends on a number of factors such as the type, location and severity of injury. Symptoms can be wide-ranging, from physical effects such as balance and movement problems, headaches and dizziness to cognitive, emotional and behavioural effects such as memory problems, fatigue and anger.

How can PWYA help you if you have had a TBI?

We have a number of highly experience and specialist therapists who have worked with clients with TBI’s for over 15 years – Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists. We will see you whether you have recently suffered your TBI or had your TBI many years ago, and whatever your level of disability

Physiotherapy

We will assess you thoroughly to identify the particular ways your TBI has affected you with attention to your muscle length and strength, body posture and alignment, movement, balance and function. We will aim to address these through hands-on therapy to help you gain alignment, activate muscles and build strength. We will apply our knowledge of movement and function to help you achieve your goals through specific exercise and movement. We can apply these principles to any person with TBI regardless of the severity of your impairments and disability.

We can also assist training carers or family members how to best help you, and encourage you to do activities and exercises which will help in the self-management of your condition.
